{"id":12610,"date":"2024-12-18T16:28:59","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T22:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/?p=12610"},"modified":"2024-12-18T17:00:04","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T23:00:04","slug":"wcftr-at-the-2024-association-of-moving-image-archivists-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/index.php\/2024\/12\/18\/wcftr-at-the-2024-association-of-moving-image-archivists-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"WCFTR at the 2024 Association of Moving Image Archivists Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Matt St. John<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/AMIABanner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12611\" src=\"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/AMIABanner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a>Earlier this month, Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research (WCFTR) staff hit the road to attend the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amianet.org\/events\/annual-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Association of Moving Image Archivists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conference in Milwaukee. The annual conference brings together archivists, librarians, educators, students, and other professionals, addressing ways to preserve and provide access to moving image materials. Over three days of catching up with colleagues, discussing new preservation strategies, and learning about our peer institutions\u2019 projects and collections, we also had the chance to spread the word about some of our ongoing projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WCFTR director Eric Hoyt presented during the session \u201cArchiving Television: A Preview,\u201d which highlighted work from the upcoming book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ugapress.org\/book\/9780820373881\/the-archivability-of-television\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Archivability of Television: Essays on Preservation and Perseverance<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The other panelists sharing material from their chapters were Owen Gottlieb (Rochester Institute of Technology), Ruta Abolins (University of Georgia\/Brown Media Archives &amp; Peabody Awards Collection) and Hugo Ljungb\u00e4ck (University of Chicago). Like the book, the AMIA session grappled with the history and challenges of preserving television, with case studies ranging from the creation of the Peabody awards archives to the treasures of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\u2019s television history (including appearances by the actor Willem Dafoe as a college student!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Faye.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-12621 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Faye.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a>Eric\u2019s presentation centered on our newly launched website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/avdh.commarts.wisc.edu\/s\/earlytv\/page\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving and Sharing Early Television<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This collaborative project brings together work from the WCFTR team, especially project assistants Lesley Stevenson and Pauline Lampert. The website features exhibits about WCFTR\u2019s Faye Emerson and Ziv Television collections, stemming from research by graduate students Maureen Mauk and Olivia Riley. The project centers on two programs in particular. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World of Giants<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Ziv Television production, focuses on a special agent shrunk to miniature size, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Faye Emerson Show <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the first-ever late-night television shows and, for decades, one of the rare shows with a woman as the host.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Part of the surprising story that unfolded with these collections is the unusual copyright status of the two series <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a situation that allowed us to digitize and share the programs. Researchers can view clips, photographs, and sample episodes, with introductions that contextualize the archival items and how they relate to the history of the two programs and television as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WCFTR also presented on one of our major grant projects, highlighting the collaborations involved in \u201cExpanding Film Culture\u2019s Field of Vision: Processing and Sharing the Collections of Amos Vogel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jump Cut<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Wisconsin Film Festival.\u201d WCFTR director Eric Hoyt, assistant director Mary Huelsbeck, and manuscript specialist Matt St.John joined our colleague Olivia Babler from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagofilmarchives.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago Film Archives<\/a> (CFA) for this session. This gave us a chance to describe the vast range of materials present in the four collections from the project, which is funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, as well as our exciting collaboration with CFA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_2129_crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12612\" src=\"https:\/\/wcftr.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_2129_crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a>The Chuck Kleinhans and Julia Lesage papers\/<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jump Cut <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">records at WCFTR offer an extensive history of their work as scholars, teachers, and journal co-editors, but they also made home home movies and experimental films, which are preserved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.chicagofilmarchives.org\/Detail\/collections\/82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kleinhans<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.chicagofilmarchives.org\/Detail\/collections\/94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lesage<\/a> collections at CFA. Olivia and the CFA team have graciously agreed to work with us to share some of the short films on our in-progress Expanding Film Culture\u2019s Field of Vision website, alongside digitized materials from our manuscript collections. We\u2019re grateful to the CFA team for their collaboration, and we look forward to sharing the records of Kleinhans and Lesage\u2019s prolific careers with examples of their films.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the panel, we shared a sneak preview of some scanned papers and films that will appear on the website, including flyers for Milwaukee screenings of women\u2019s films (from the Elfrieda Abbe collection), trailers from the Wisconsin Film Festival, and a trailer for Amos Vogel\u2019s Cinema 16 society.
